Frequent crashes when sculpting (OSX)
Detailed description
Hi there!
When sculpting (with multicore option on), I seem to get frequent crashes on my Lion (10.7.1) Macbook Pro 15" (Intel HD 3000 graphics card selected). It's not really reproducible -- I'm sculpting, not really following dedicated steps -- but I nevertheless thought this could be interesting to know.

we've had quite a few reports about this, seems that Lion has a problems with blenders use of OpenMP.

If any testing is needed to help solve this I will be happy to help; assuming it's something that can be changed in Blender vs OS X. This issue is giving me quite the headache.

You could make a build without OpenMP turned on until its fixed.

In fact, there's an option in toolbox -- Threaded Sculpt. It's on Options panel. Should also help.

Jens is working on it. It's very tough stuff... currently he is compiling his own gcc for it even.

Hi
I made now tests with selfcompiled gcc-4.6 ( has newer omp ) and it seems to fix our issues ( almost threadconcurrency related )
Here is a testbuild for OSX 10.6_x86_64, pls test.

I still have to optimize the buildprocess due the new compiler isn´t that apple-like as we know it, but iàm confident to sort this out too.

Thanks to Jens, our next release 2.60, the release candidate and buildbot builds will now be built with gcc 4.6, which solves this issue. OpenMP has been disabled for other compilers. Instructions for building with a newer gcc are also available:

Thanks for reporting, bug closed.
