Downloaded 2.55 and installed as usual with app files in the blender dir, Not %HOME% or docs & settings.

Steps to reproduce the fault:
1: Open blender via icon
2: Click to close the splash
3: Goto Help->Toggle System Console
* At this stage the console disappears as expected
4: Goto Help->Toggle System Console
5: Look at a wonderful windows error, "blender.exe has stopped working"

The time from when you click/do step 5 to when it happens can range from instant to about 10 seconds... Cursor shows the loading cursor and then the crash happens.

I have uploaded a blend file saved with the console turned off just incase this may save any of the settings in the blend.
