Summary:
Align to View fails in numerous ways
Detailed description
Okay, so open a default blend file:

Add one of the following shapes and click the Align to View option.

Add a Mesh: Clicking align to view causes mesh to enter edit mode. Subsequent toggling of the option causes duplicate meshes to be created.

Add a Curve: Clicking align to view causes a blender crash.

Adding surfaces/metaballs also causes a crash if you try to enable align to view.

Add text: Clicking align to view does nothing, the text stays in object mode, but it does not align to the view.

Add Camera: Align to view is enabled by default, but clicking on the option results in the camera's rotation being cleared, although the Align to view option stays checked. Further clicking reveals that the option can not be turned off, but the camera never aligns with your view again.

Add Lamp/Force Field: Align to view does nothing.

Hope this helps clear some things up.

    I can't reproduce same problems.

Here, align to view works fine except for camera and if enter in edit mode is enabled.

For camera, option can't be disabled.

If enter in edit mode is enabled, curves and surface are duplicated but meshes are not.

  • Update, enabling 'enter edit mode' works for me as well. I think it's very, very similar to the other bug (link in above post), but instead of crashing (except in cases of the curves), blender just enters edit mode for me. The reporter of that bug used an older revision, so maybe it's only partially broken now.

    Anyway, here's what happens

Add Mesh (enter edit mode off): Changing Align to view causes mesh to enter edit mode. Changing another value, such as location or rotation or (in case of uv sphere) ring count, causes the mesh to enter edit mode and the location to be updated properly. Also, if I un-check and then re-check Align to view after the mesh is in edit mode, it works properly.

Add Curve (with enter edit mode enabled):
Editing any setting except location and rotation causes a duplicate of the curve to be created, and that duplicate is what gets changed. In the case of something like curvatious galore, some of the settings create duplicates and others don't.

  • Can't redo the cases for user preference "Enter editmode" off. All works OK then. We had an undo bug today, you didn't mention the revision you used.

    Curve case confirmed, will fix.

You say the mesh stuff works for you? I'll try to get a newer revision.

  • Curve adding with "enter editmode" on now has correct redo/undo options.
Was old code lying around meshing up undos...

Thanks for the report, a very annoying one, but we go for quality :)
