Summary:
Smoke simulation "stops". Smoke appears at the bottom of the domain
Detailed description
When I bake a smoke(/fire) simulation I got following problem:
The simulation file drops from around 60-80MB to a tenth of this size within 1 or 2 frames. When I render it, the smoke appears at the bottom of the domain and flickers weird in white and red. (the fire texture perhaps?)

I tested it on 8 computers. 4 can simulate it correctly, 4 can't.

The hardware is almost the same on every computer, only the RAM is different. The rest is exactly the same. RAM changes between 8-16GB.
However on one 16GB computer it works, on another 16GB it doesn't. Same with 8GB. It doesn't seem to be the problem.

------------------------------
Hardware:
MACPro 3,1 but Windows as OS
Windows XP Professional x64 Service Pack 2
8core Intel Xeon E5462 @2.8GHz (harpertown)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
8-16GB RAM

Blender 2.55.0 r32738
-----------------------------
Simulation files look like this
....
high_000028_01.bphys 68.693kb
high_000029_01.bphys 40.058kb
high_000030_01.bphys 7.420kb
....

The low smoke files work fine.
-----------------------------
Probably connected to this:
When I change the value of the low/high smoke division or the amount of particles to something a little higher like 200 divisions and 1 million particles the computer crashes. (no baking, just changing the values)
-----------------------------

I attached the blend file and screenshots from frame 28-30 and the editor.

  • I (a newbie)had similar trouble in "baking" 100 frames of smoke while following a tutorial. I finished up with 100 .bphys-files on my disk and only some unidentifiable artefacts where the UV-sphere producing the smoke had been...

Looking at the Console I saw reports (probably 100) telling me that my GFX-card could not make smoke.. Yeah.. I have a Radeon 2000. May I suppose that putting in a more recent and powerful one will solve the problem?

Please somebody tell me which one I should go shopping for. Thanks in advance.

  • A Radeon 2000 is propably not good enough, but the Radeon 2600 isn't much better as it seems. The gtx 260 in the other computer is much better, but still not really good. I have a GTX 285 at home and it works (besides the problems mentioned here) fine. A workmate here has a gtx 480 and it's a beast. I guess you should think about how much money you want to spend and look for the best graphics card available.

    Update on the crash problem:
The gtx 480 can set the values much higher before blender crashes so I guess it has something to do with the graphics card. But even then I can't bake it.

  • Dirk: I recently committed quite a big change into how smoke uses cache. I could reproduce the issues before, but can't anymore. Can you please recheck with a recent version of blender if this bug still happens.

Note that due to the update you have to reset the simulation and bake it again to be able to use high resolution smoke.

  • Dirk reported this to be fixed in irc, so marking accordingly!
