Detailed description
Exported very simple scene from lightwave 10.
Tried to import in blender 2.55.0 r33303m x64.
Results in immediate crash.
System Windows7 x64 dual xeon 5500 24 Gigram

It seems that some recent Collada commit causes a segmentation fault, I traced it with gdb. I found the error while exporting something to Mitsuba.
Ubuntu 10.10 32 r33372, Collada r785.

this is a collada bug, it crashes with openCollada's validator tool too.
Reported this in the collada tracker and linked to this report.
