Can't Create New Material For Meta Ball
Detailed description
i) issue
when I try to create a new material data block for a meta ball, nothing happens. In the output i see that a new material() was called. but datablock is not created, the material tab is empty in the gui.
ii) how to reproduce
* add meta object
* in material tab click new material
iii) system
macosx 10.6.5 blender 2.55.1 r33568

No problem to add one material to first metaball I create.
But if I try to add a second different material by hitting 2 beside material name; an hundred of material slots are created.
The first material is repeated in second slot and new material is added in the last slot of the list.
Once time, after deleting all objects and adding a new metaball, I was not able to add a material. But I can't reproduce it.

Related to next report; there was a double bug using bad pointers... better upgrade svn asap!
