  • Hide has purposefully been set to not being animateable.

  • In the official Blender 2.5 beta, animate/driver the "Hide" property was possible
    and very useful for rigging proposes like hide/unhide the IK/FK controls with a single
    parameter (like Maya or XSI)

  • I think there are some valid uses for this, where hiding certain controls based on some property states but doing this with layer visibility would be too heavy-handed. For example, having some bone with custom bone shape that only shows when some setting is turned on (i.e. as some kind of visual status indicator as part of facial rig), but can also also be turned off as part of a larger group of settings.

    In the particular use case mentioned, using layers to group those controls is probably sufficient.

    So, re-enabling in trunk.
