The attached .blend shows this error when opened. The simulations are freed.

Fix committed in r35124, thanks for the report!

The whole thing was actually a part of backwards compatibility :) A fake high resolution cache was created for smoke simulations to be able to load them in old Blender versions too, but I forgot to define a flag which actually marks the cache as a fake one for "new" Blender.
