Initiating a duplication with shift D and cancelling in dope sheet/ graph editor leads to duplicated keys

Detailed description

As summary suggests:
Press shift-d to duplicate keyframes
change your mind
cancel with esc/right mouse
now you have doubled up keyframes that are (unless I'm missing something) very hard to get rid of
using O to simplify curves does not seem to work on them.

this seems to happen in the graph editor and the dopesheet; didn't look to see if it applies elsewhere. The problem is, if you are working linear or stepped (constant) keyframes, you won't notice till later that your curves are riddled with dupes.

r35307, GNU/Linux, 64 bit, on intel/ nvidia (ubuntu 10.10)

I suspect at one stage I added this as a feature for something, though recently I've noticed myself that it can be a pain. This is high on the priority for fixing and should be easy too :)

Humbug... it seems that some underlying functionality in the transform code that this relied on is now no longer functional. This means a different approach to fixing it will be required :/

the same error occurs when:
- duplicate keyframes with shift+d
- accept with left mouse / enter/ space
- press undo
