Detailed description

Critical bug which makes the 2.57-RC0 unusable. The program aborts when clicking in the timeline to change frames. And also aborts when one tries to set the frame using bpy with: "bpy.context.scene.frame_current = X" through the python terminal.

On new Blender 2.57 RC0 linux binary releases (blender-2.57-RC0-linux-glibc27-i686 and blender-2.57-RC0-linux-glibc27-i686_64).

Can you give the abort message?, are there any details given?

Doing frame changes works on my system, we had reports of OpenAL giving problems. could you try turn the sound system to "None" in the user preferences and see if this still crashes?

From my home directory this is all that shows in the terminal before it crashes when Blender starts up and I click on the timeline:

mark@mark-laptop:~$ ./blender-2.57-RC0-linux-glibc27-i686/blender

SETTING SOUND SYSTEM TO NONE FIXED THE CRASHING/ABORTING. NO CRASHING WHEN CLICKING ON TIMELINE OR SETTING FRAME_CURRENT THROUGH BPY.

Thanks for the suggestion about OpenAL... what a strange bug behaviour...

I heard this was caused by a bad flag building Blender with OpenAL and is fixed in RC1 which is now available for linux.
