Summary:
Keyed Particles seems to be broken
Detailed description
winXP SP3, 32bit

First I created .blend Integrate_Construct1_1 in Blender 2.56 r34281. All is working as expected: the keyed particles moves to the last object (Cube2) and forms it ideally.
Then I found some crashing bug and decided to check it. So I downloaded the latest version 2.57 r36052 (w Lux but I think it's nevermind - the builder tells it's 2.57) to check it properly. I realised that some of that previous bugs (maybe) corrupted the file so I got some cool chaotic triangles in air (not tiny squares I wanted for).
Then I created the test file from the scratch: the new .blend (created in the latest version) now can't produce that fine "reconstruction effect" with Keyed Particles.
What's interesting... That's the fact - the first .blend file (from older version) works fine in this latest version! But nothing helps me to make a good keyed animation from the scratch.

Integrate_Construct1_1 - is the first (good) file
Integrate_Construct2_1 - the second (bad keyed particles) file

BTW... some time ago (before r34281) I saw the same problem... Then I thought that these keyed particles suppose to act like that (to work "not perfect") and I decided to leave this for better times.

  • Ooops )) Sorry - I got my problem. It's only due to Randomize Rotation. BUT! I got the crash (plz. rename the thread)

toDo: switch all PS settings to grid, the select the first Cube, click on the value 10 and try to change it to 1.
When I starts moving I get crash immediatelly.

  • Fix committed in r36085, thanks for the report! Updating the particle amount (changing grid subdivisions) didn't set the correct update flag for the explode modifier, so it's internal data got corrupted.

Actually there was a second bug too! The explode modifier didn't calculate the grid particle locations properly into account at all, but this was left unnoticed as the modifier wasn't updated properly :)

  • Probably... I was made another report about this Grid bug... that was about month or two ago.
