With Git LFS, branches can be used just like in the main repository.
So this testing directory approach isn't necessary anymore.

This was initially created for the brush assets project, but since cba7a6ede9
and blender/blender@84b9fb778c, the brush assets are available in the publish
directory of the brush-assets-project branch.
