The "Essentials" built-in library contain the presets and primitives assets that are shipped with Blender such as:

  • Brushes
  • Base Meshes
  • Matcaps
  • Node Groups

This task is not about creating the content for this library, but to have it working (bundled with Blender, showed in the Asset Library selector enums, show in the All mode).

Note: This name is not final

To further describe the idea of this asset library:

  • A default library, that certain operations will put their assets into. E.g. duplicating a brush will always save it there.
  • Accessible from all Blender sessions (of the corresponding version?).
  • Contains the bundled assets as read-only (to prevent conflicts when the bundled assets get updated).
  • Blender manages this asset library for the user, like it manages the startup file, preferences, addons, etc.
  • Stored on the hard drive, but in a "hidden" location. Probably somewhere in .config/Blender/[version]/ etc.
  • Meant for the users personal assets, not for sharing assets. That is done by managing a proper asset library, registered in the Preferences.
  • Only "presets" (brushes, matcaps, render settings, ...) support the Blender-managed library override behavior mentioned in #100122 (Brush Assets) to allow changing properties without changing the source asset.

The bundled assets can be compiled into the Blender binary like the default startup.blend, for performance and make changing it impossible. Maybe we should bundle the asset index too.

Naming

I like the name Essentials more for the assets that would ship by default with Blender. E.g. objects for the Add menu (in future), base meshes, node groups, "default" brushes, ... In that sense the Essentials would always be subset of the Presets + Primitives library, and they are read-only (you might be able to hide them though).

Something like Palette also sounds nice - that's a very personal thing after all. Or it's some kind of Shelf, to stick to the library metaphor. But either of those feel like another word for "library", so it's a bit awkward.

So maybe this is just your Home Library.

For the records, the comments by Julian is a bit outdated. The current proposal is to separate the essentials from the preset overrides and user presets.

This was already implemented, closing it for now.

To actually add new essential assets is a different matter.
