Freestyle does not produce any result on sufficiently large files but takes an extremely long time to render #102913

Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19044-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 526.86

Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
Freestyle works well on smaller files, but on very large files (in my case STEP imported files, which always have custom normals and may have them facing inwards on some objects since CAD doesn't care about their direction) it doesn't produce any result at all, even after taking extremely long time to render. Unfortunately I can't share any files without an NDA in place.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Link a file with a few hundred objects and a few million polygons.
  2. Enable Freestyle (I added two line sets, one for silhouettes and one for creases).
  3. Render.

Result:

  • First 20 minutes - 6% CPU, 24gb memory, 80 MB/s disk usage
  • Following 20 minutes - 5-12% CPU, 16gb memory, 16 MB/s disk usage
  • Following 20 minutes - 12% CPU, 8gb memory, 6 MB/s disk usage
  • Following 2 hours - 12-14% CPU, 4gb memory, 0.1 MB/s disk usage
  • Following 2 hours - 12-14% CPU, 2gb memory, 0.1 MB/s disk usage
  • Following 4 hours - 12-14% CPU, 3gb memory, 0.1-0.3 MB/s disk usage

And after all that time, when it finally finished (sometime during the night which I didn't record statistics) the result tab still had no render in it!

Expected:

Software like Solidworks Composer performs this task in a few seconds, as does the grease pencil collection line art (though without silhouette support, I think)...

Freestyle is not developed anymore and Line Art should be it's replacement.

It is not clear in this report if the fact that nothing appears in the render was some configuration (very thin lines, transparent or something like that) or if it really is a bug.

I tested 2 objects with 1.5 mi polygons and the result was as expected:

Also, while we do continue to work on improving performance in general, potential performance improvements are not handled as bug reports.

So thanks for the report, but unfortunately this can't be triaged as a complete bug report.

If you find clear steps and easy to how reproduce the bug, please submit a new report and carefully follow the instructions. Be sure to provide system information, Blender version, and a .blend file with exact steps to reproduce the problem.
