System Information
Operating system: MacOS 10.15.7 (Catalina)
Graphics card: Radeon Pro 555X

Blender Version
Broken: 3.5.0 blender-3.5.0-beta+v35.97a8bb450cdb-darwin.x86_64-release
Worked: 3.3.1

Open Blender, wait 10-15 seconds. It crashes. I've attached the Apple Debug log if it will help. I've upgraded from 3.3.1 which has been stable.

Thanks,
Jon

Does this also happen when using the OpenGL "GPU Backend"...? In the 10-15 seconds that Blender does not crash for you yet, press Cmd - , to get to the Preferences, select the System item and then change the "GPU Backend" from Metal to OpenGL and save your preferences right away. For this change to become active you need to start Blender again so the crash you will get here will "help" you in this way.

Know that macOS 10.15.7 Catalina is an older one with way less Metal support, that is why I am asking you to try the OpenGL GPU backend first, before having to upgrade your Mac to a way newer maOS like 12 and 13, Monterey and Ventura respectively.

@Memento - thanks for the reply. I installed a fresh copy of Blender 3.5.0b, and switched to OpenGL and restarted. It worked fine for as long as I tested. No addons, but I used modifiers etc to give it a good test. It was very stable.

I then saved the file and switched back to Metal, and restarted. Opened the same file, and it crashed almost immediately. This was with no addons of any kind. There is definitely a bad intersection between Metal and Catalina, which is not surprising.

I'll look into upgrading the OS soon, I was waiting for a newer M1 laptop to make the switch all at once, but I may do so anyway.

This issue can likely be closed as "user running archaic operating system"

Perhaps add a note to have users select OpenGL when using Catalina or older?

THANKS AGAIN, I'll do a full install of 3.5b again and see how it does with OpenGL only.

@Michael-Parkin-White-Apple hi, can you reproduce the crash locally?
If yes, Feel free to change the status to confirmed

Not able to reproduce this specifically, but this feels somewhat similar to #104012
fixed by: #105739

So would be good to verify againt latest 3.5 Beta.

Thanks!

I'm from #104012 and had a similar issue, the Blender 3.5 March 17, 02:04:51 build does not crash anymore. Thanks a lot!

@PratikPB2123 I just downloaded and tested with blender-3.5.0-beta+v35.73509d1bc1cb-darwin.x86_64-release, from today's build, and it is stable. I redid the installation with all my add-ons and that was stable as well. THANK YOU! This issue can be closed and 3.5 is now my version.
