Blender Version
Broken: (example: 2.80, edbf15d3c0, master, 2018-11-28, as found on the splash screen)
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)
Found issue using ver 3.2.2

Short description of error
While animation rendering with True Terrain addon I experienced frames take more than an hour to render and suddenly the render time drops to minutes. I simplified my scene just using Terrain and Trees (4 Ash trees, medium quality) and started rendering frame 80 thru 100 using 256 samples in cycles. Frame 80 took 1 Hr and 3 min to render, frame 81 took just under an 1 hr and then frame 82 rendered in 2min 29sec! All frames from 83 to 100 rendered in about 2min and 30 sec. I am using a RTX 2060 GPU with 6GB of Vram and the render was using about 3GB Vram for the duration. The Terrain is using a 1.6k grassland texture. Could this be a blender bug?

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on the default startup or an attached .blend file (as simple as possible).
Blender file is attached with settings I used... just render the animation and observe render time

Hi, thanks for the report. File is missing from the report.
Any difference in render time when you run blender with factory settings?: File > Defaults > Load Factory Settings
Also upload system-info file: Help > Save System info

Sorry, my file was too big. I will remove some elements and resend.
Before I do that I am having a problem which might be affecting the
problem I reported.

If I open blender directly using the blender icon, I can see the asset
library paths I have saved, but if I open from a saved file, textures
don't show and there are no paths in the asset library in preferences.
I think this has something to do with the fact that I have moved the
documents directory to a drive other than C:. Perhaps this is related?

Thank you,
Mike

I have another finding. I was trying out a version of the file that I had reduced elements to reduce the file size and tried rendering rendering beginning at frame 80 with similar long render time. Then I tried starting the render at frame 95 expecting the render time to be short, however, it was showing several hours to render one frame. This leads me to believe I need to first solve the asset library file paths problem, because when I try to pack the files I get messages it can not find the texture files. Perhaps you can suggest what to look for to fix that problem? Thanks

Hi, does your blend file, blender executable and asset library belong to different drives?
I'm not able to repro this locally (never seen report either about this issue).

This leads me to believe I need to first solve the asset library file paths problem, because when I try to pack the files I get messages it can not find the texture files

Can you move all to one drive and see if that reduces the render time? I don't think asset path will make the drastic difference in render time.

Does your scene contain majority of elements from asset library?
Do you observe similar difference in rendering of frame with viewport rendering?
Is your scene static? or does it contain moving objects?
Is persistent data enabled?

Hi, does your blend file, blender executable and asset library belong to different drives?
answer: the blender file (.blend file) and asset library are on the same drive (F:)... the Blender Foundation Directory (blender.exe) is on C: drive
I'm not able to repro this locally (never seen report either about this issue).

*Does your scene contain majority of elements from asset library? answer: no, most come from addon called True Terrain

Do you observe similar difference in rendering of frame with viewport rendering? answer: viewport rendering is quick, do not notice difference frame to frame

Is your scene static? or does it contain moving objects? answer: yes scene object (Tree limbs and leaves) do move using modifiers

Is persistent data enabled? answer: No

I have attached a stripped down version of my blender file that will not render unless I first open blender and then load the file from the file menu. When I start the file directly by clicking on the .blend file and then try to render, I get the message that it is loading render kernels (may take a few minutes first time).... the render never starts.

Please see what happens when you try to render animation on your computer.

Thanks.

I don't know why I can't upload my file... some message that Chrome error... too large.

It says file size is 0.2GB? starts to upload and then big X and does not finish. I will disable firewall see if that helps

I tried putting the file I am trying to send you on another computer I have. THe computer does not have a GPU, but I was able to start the file and rendering... did not get the message about "loading render kernals", so if I can get this file to you, perhaps you can help me. THank you.

Problems solved. I found that a download of an older version of blender initiated two problems. First, I found that the blender file type was associated with an older version of blender that did not have addons or preferences set (causing the asset Library not to appear). Once I fixed the association, textures came back and best of all the render times for all animated frames were in the 1.5 min range! So, thank you for your help and maybe we both learned something...

Good to know you figured out the cause of the issue.
Thanks again for the report, closing.
