Short description of error
Float math node overrides color data, even though it is muted. Same setup works in shader editor without problems.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Open file and activate Viewer in GN. Expected result: colored output (judging by shader area behavior)

Shaders just don't seem to compute the node. And therefore, do not try to do a type cast.
The geometry nodes are still calculating it, which is why type casting occurs.
I don't think the shaders work properly here, as the UI still shows the float link, which means the cast should work.
I'm not sure who it makes sense to ask about shaders, but it seems to require a general consensus.
Yes, I agree that the geometry nodes behavior is correct, since it aligns with the socket and link types.
