Short description of error
The option "View -> Update Automatically" in the Image Editor doesn't seem to work as expected. The tooltip says it should prevent other editors from redrawing interactively, but if you turn it off, you can observe the following:

  • Transforming masks inside the Image Editor still updates the Compositor.
  • Painting on textures inside the Image Editor still updates the 3D Viewport.
  • However, the Image Editor itself doesn't show new painting strokes anymore, making it rather hard to paint indeed.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Open the attached .blend file. It should have an Image Editor in Paint mode on the left, and a 3D Viewport on the right. The Image Editor should already have "Update Automatically" disabled.
  • Draw on one of the colored blotches in the Image Editor. Notice that the 3D Viewport shows the change, but the Image Editor does not. If anything, we would expect the opposite.
  • Switch the Image Editor to Mask mode, and replace the 3D Viewport by a Compositor.
  • Render the scene to get a preview in the Compositor.
  • Drag a control point of the mask around. Notice that the Compositor interactively updates.

Compare this to the "Update Automatically" option of the UV Editor, which does work as expected (transforming UVs does not automatically update the 3D Viewport)

I only found this bug because I was updating the documentation, not because I needed the feature. If it has been broken for so long without someone complaining, maybe that means it's used so little that it might as well be removed - I'll leave it up to you.
