Multires Operators Causes a Delayed Crash - 3.5.1 rc #107282

System Information
Operating system: Linux-6.2.12-arch1-1-x86_64-with-glibc2.37 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 530.41.03

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.5.1 Release Candidate, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-04-21 11:31, hash: 93dac7da2c6a
Worked: version: 3.5.0, branch: blender-v3.5-release, commit date: 2023-03-29 02:56, hash: 1be25cfff18b

Seems like this is caused by 492c218679 in blender-v3.5-release (99c630cd9c in main)
So there seems to be some followup commit to 99c630cd9c which solved this in main. But this still crashes in 3.5.1 (probably we need a04098ebba in 3.5.1 as well)

Short description of error
After using multires operators it can cause future crashes. Certain crash scenarios are different depending on what you do next after a multires operator.

  • You can use multires-subdivide and then use multires-unsubdivide for a constant crash.
  • Use any multires operator and then try going into Vertex or Weight paint mode for that object. Other modes seem to do okay.
  • Eventually it crashes if you do those things to the object after using a multires modifier operator.

Subdivision Surface modifier operators doesn't cause any crashes on my machine.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open blender with factory settings
  2. Click cube
  3. Add multires modifier
  4. Use multires to subdivide mesh | multires-subdivide()
  5. Use multires to unsubdivide mesh | multires-unsubdivide()

Crash logs doesn't really say much.

@ThomasDinges @HooglyBoogly so there seems to be some followup commit to 492c218679 which solved this in main. But this still crashes in 3.5.1

Probably a04098ebba.

@brecht : the commit message from a04098ebba references 99c630cd9c (but yet a04098ebba does not show up as referenced in 99c630cd9c, why?)

Probably a04098ebba91. @brecht : the commit message from a04098ebba91 references 99c630cd9cb6d814e5ea (but yet a04098ebba91 does not show up as referenced in 99c630cd9cb6d814e5ea, why?)

Ah yes, that followup commit should definitely be back ported. I can do that in an hour or so.
