Blender crashes after playing animation button for particles system (Boids) #126434

While using Boid I tried to make one particles of the cube 1 to fight another ones of cube 2. Tried this few days ago while watching tutorial. It worked, the particles attacked each other. But today it crashes as soon as I press Play button.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Created 2 cubes.
  • Set separate particles systems for both of them.
  • Set the physics type = Boids.
  • Set in Relations panel (Particles) for 1 cube the target (Cube 2). Chose mode "enemy"
  • Set bold brain as "fight"
  • Pressed 'play' button. Blender crashes.

I can confirm the crash in belnder 4.1.1, 4.2.0, and 4.3.0.

Setting to high severity as this is a crash.

I don't think they're a duplicate as this issue has been around longer than #126286 (It's in 4.1.1).

And the crash occurs when trying to play a particle system, not when opening the file (I haven't looked at the code, but looking at the crash log and the file, my guess is it crashes because the boid particle system is setup to fight a non-existant (nullptr) boid particle system on another object)

This is because the "other" particle system is a non-boids system, getting health information fails in that case and crashes
Got a simple fix, will post shortly.
