Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Add a new Empty GP to a new project
  2. Add a new GP layer and enable "Autolock Inactive Layers"
  3. Switch to Draw mode and draw anything
  4. Switch to Edit mode and Select All/anything
  5. In the Material Properties, add a new Material slot. Select a new Material (e.g. default Dots Stroke)
  6. Press Assign: the new material is assigned to the stroke
  7. Undo/Ctrl+Z crashes Blender

If Autolock is disabled, it works. On 4.2.0, any combination works.
