Grease Pencil green display bug (related to multisampling) #71330

System Information
Operating system: Mac OSX Catalina
Graphics card: Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB

Blender Version
Broken: Latest Official 2.80 and 2.82 Alpha

Short description of error
My Grease pencil strokes are all displaying with this weird pattern covering them. I can barely see the actual color of the stroke because of this, though the color is present behind the lines.

It's the same problem, whether in Eevee or Cycles. Regardless of preview mode, or X-Ray on or off, or Outlines on or Off or anything else I can find to toggle. My old files that didn't do this are also now displaying this way and doing a Render actually outputs strokes looking like this too.

Am I missing a toggle somewhere or is this a recent bug? Thank you!

grease pencil render bug.mov

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Run Blender on Mac OSX running Catalina with a problem Radeon card (such as 560X)
  2. Have a Grease Pencil object in your .blend file.

By Dalai Felinto's request I've attached this file:
grease.blend
I'm confident it will display cleanly on most setups except for the cases that are reporting. Thanks!

Mac OSX Catalina

Did this start occurring after you upgraded your OS?

Good question! It's been a few months since I used the Grease Pencil feature, and just updated to Catalina in the last few days, so it seems likely it's associated with the OS. I might roll back to see if that fixes the issue. Seems like a Card + Drivers + OSX compatibility kind of problem, but I haven't seen anyone else online complaining about it yet so it may be very specific.

Since many are experiencing this, I risk setting it as high priority.

There are some threads in devtalk mentioning this problem:
https://devtalk.blender.org/t/macos-catalina-10-15-1-blender-2-8-2-81-got-display-issue/10287/5
https://devtalk.blender.org/t/grease-pencil-lag-with-sidecar-ipad-macos-catalina/10358

It's hard to find its cause without any developer being able to reproduce the problem.
@antoniov, tagged you in case you have any idea...

Thanks for the report.

  1. Is this happening in official 2.80 as well?
  2. Please attach a sample file.

  1. Yes.
  2. It's happening in every file, on every Grease Pencil object. Is it still worth uploading a file?

I'm also experiencing the same display issues with GreasePencil. I'm running Blender 2.8 on MacOS Catalina 10.15.1.

No idea here and I cannot test in a macOS machine.

NOTE: This is not a bug I encountered myself. I saw a user encountering this and did some help to work around this.

OS: macOS 10.15 Catalina
blender version: supposedly blender 2.80
What happened:
the Grease pencil turned green just like this screen shot.
2F256D30-C03D-419C-A914-8219F5DBC363.jpeg

By setting the multisampling settings for viewport and grease pencil just like https://devtalk.blender.org/t/macos-catalina-10-15-1-blender-2-8-2-81-got-display-issue/10287/7?u=takahirokomatsu , the problem was solved.

I can confirm this fixed the display problem for me! Probably still worth troubleshooting for the average Joe, but it's great that this works around it. Fixed the issue in both 2.80 and 2.82 Alpha.

Please note, I've spent some time to trying to see the code base. So far, I see that the problem is perhaps somewhere in the interpretation of "strokeColor" sampler. In the shaders the color is retrieved vec4 stroke_color = texelFetch(strokeColor, uv, 0).rgba; , for example, which if replaced with fixed color makes a difference. Thus, for some reason the color fetched from the sampler is not correct or the pixel gets dropped in my Mac configuration. I will try to do some more investigation and report my findings as I can... if that helps.

Same here with Radeon Pro 580, MacOS Catalina. Fortunately, as mentioned before by disabling multisampling for greased pencil under settings it could be solved.

The multisampling is being changed in the refactor, so I think we can merge in the main refactor task.
