System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.18362 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 441.12

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.81 (sub 16), branch: master, commit date: 2019-12-04 11:32, hash: f1aa4d18d4
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
If vertices have "-Nan" value ["-1.#QNAN" on Blender 2.79] in weight paint mode
that vertices will no longer move anymore no matter what you do.

you can copy -Nan by ctrl+left click on vertices that have -Nan and paint to other part and that part will no longer move too

that problem is there's no fix unless I remove Vertex Groups that effect with -Nan value and start painting again.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

I don't know how to make it happened
I notice it after I weight paint on back waist part while Border Region [Alt+B] turn on.

NAN weights are not supported. Closing.

If you can use Blender's tools to unintentionally create NAN weight vertices.

Open a new report with steps to reproduce, since it should not be allowed.

I have mesh from modeling artist, some parts of it composed of unconnected quads. That is - whole part of mesh (tooth for example) are composed of independent quads. I figured it out in late stage of weight painting. Then I used "merge by distance" function and got houndreds of vertices with dosens of -nan values. It's insane to clean it by removing "-nan" gropus by pressing X right of it. I'm googling now for some solution with python but still no success.

I found a reasonable solution for such cases:

  1. Select problematic vertices in edit mode.
  2. "Vertex" menu (ctrl+v) / "Vertex Groups" (ctrl+g) / Remove from All.
  3. Assign to desired vertex group.
