System Information
Operating system: Windows-7-6.1.7601-SP1 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro 5000/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 377.83

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.82 (sub 7), branch: master, commit date: 2020-03-12 05:06, hash: 375c7dc4ca
Worked: (optional)

Short description of error
Objects can be linked to linked collections (causing them to disappear after file reload)

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
The reference file:
The_Monkey_Ref_Library.blend
... and the file in which the models are referenced:
ReferencedFile.blend

Steps:

  1. LINK the "SuzanneCollection" from the Reference file in a new, empty file
  2. search for "overide" in the function search box and make a library override
  3. select one of the objects from the list
  4. Delete the SuzanneCollection Empty from the Scene:
    image.png
  5. Create a Polygon Object in the main Collection "Collection"
  6. Drag this object into the Suzanne Collection:
    image.png
  7. Save and Reload the File
  • The Cube Object is gone.

It would be good to at least share the library as well as the main .blend file of what you are showing in the video in order to have a chance to reproduce this quickly.
Also please take the time to write down the exact steps to reproduce [having to go through the pixelated video does not help that much here...]

Ah sorry - here are the files from the video:

I was unfortunately not able to reproduce the bug where one of the referenced files was removed and replaced by a copy of one of the other files
In that scenario for example 'Bob' would be missing but 'Lisa' would then be instanced twice (in the same spot).
Reloading the file would then remove more other instances and duplicate 'Lisa' several more times.

Can confirm.

  • I think we should not be able to drag an object to a linked collection in the outliner?
  • I also think we should not be able to create a new object in a linked collection (adding an object will put it in that linked collection if that collection is selected in the outliner...)

I will constrain this report to your last comments (since the "piling up weird behaviours over time" is a bit too vague...)
Will update the report description accordingly.
