System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1070 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 461.72

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
A video (MP4) is added to the VSE. Some text strips are also added. Previewing this video is OK. Rendering the blend-file does also not give any errors, nor viewing the animation. The rendered file is however somewhere corrupt. Viewing it with VLC starts nomal but chokes after a few seconds and end abrupt.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Add a MP4-video video to the VSE. No errors occur.
  • Add some text strips.
  • Render the animation
  • Play the animation
  • Create a new project and add the rendered video from above.
  • Everything seems fine up to now.
  • Try to play the same video from above with VLC.
  • After a few seconds it chokes and then end.
  • Playing it with Windows Photo app seems to be OK.

It seems that you forgot to upload the video and .blend file. 🤗

Hereby the blend-file and test video. The file "2021-04-02 11-37-45.mp4" is the result of an OBS screen recording. Plays well in VLC and Blender. The file "0001-0741.mp4" is the result of rendering this file with adding some text strips with fade. This file does not play in VLC and seems to be corrupted.
Also added the blend file (everything into 1 zip-file.test.zip

I can confirm regression from 2.90.1, first broken I can check is 6c6a5a72c297

File plays fine with ffplay and it didn't report any problems, which if there were I would expect it to do so. So there is good chance, that this may be bug in VLC . I will have to bisect this.

@HUSCH do you encounter this issue often?

@iss This was the first time but it occurs now also with other strips than OBS related (for example an empty project with a text strip will show also this issue with VLC)
I think you're right that's a bug in VLC because the rendered movie plays well with for example Windows 10 Movie app.

You can report this to VLC tracker as well, but there is definitely some change in Blender that triggered this. They would probably appreciate knowing what it was.

Broken by b2e067d98c so this really seems to be Blender bug. Will check for solution.
