dynamic paint initial color using vertex color not working as expected #88145

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19041-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: Quadro P3200 with Max-Q Design/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 461.72

Blender Version
Broken: version: 2.92.0, branch: master, commit date: 2021-02-24 16:25, hash: 02948a2cab
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected)

Short description of error
When using dynamic paint with vertex format, the initial vertex colors appear on the mesh, but in the wrong places. Changing the dyamic paint format to image sequence results in the correct appearance. I tried this 2.82 and the 2.93 beta and is the same result. Looking at previous bug reports there was possibly one related to this issue '#49940' in 2.79 but that was closed due to insufficient info provided by the reporter.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Load the attached blend file initial colour.blend and press SPACE to run the dynamic paint sim - you will see the blue painted area and weird vertical red lines (see image 'fig2 - dynamic paint with vertex format') which I think are the initial vertex colours being mapped to the wrong vertices. There is a grid/line-like pattern to the appearance. The actual vertex colours are shown in image 'fig1 - initial vertex colors'.
  2. Change the dynamic paint format from vertex to image sequence and bake the image sequence. The output from this results in the correct initial vertex colours - image 'fig3 - dynamic paint with image sequence format'.
