System Information
Operating system: Linux-5.15.0-2-amd64-x86_64-with-glibc2.33 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 470.94

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.0 Alpha, branch: master, commit date: 2021-12-29 23:51, hash: 9d3264b4fd
Worked: Prior to eed45d2a23

Short description of error
When the GPU option is enabled for the subdivision surface modifier, it results in the subdivision surface modifier having no effect on the Cycles render.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Open preferences (From the top of Blender select Edit -> Preferences)
  2. In the Preferences window navigate to the Viewport tab.
  3. Under the Subdivision section in the Viewport tab, ensure GPU Subdivision is enabled.
  4. Select a mesh object in the scene and give it a Subdivision Surface modifier.
  5. Change the render engine to Cycles and render the scene with either viewport rendering or final rendering and notice that the Subdivision Surface modifier doesn't appear to be effecting the geometry of the object.
  6. Disabling GPU Subdivision in preferences fixes this issue.

I can confirm that this also affects external render engines, not only Cycles.
