A single texture from a UDIM won't load as such #95227

Short description of error

Blender won't reckognize a single UDIM file that I need to drive a specific part of a map to be changed. E.g. "texture_file.1003.png" won't load by itself unless I load the other "1001" and "1002" together. The thing is that I don't need the other parts, just what's in "1003" UDIM tile. 
I have a UDIm normal map which I want to activate parts depending on the deformation of the mesh, so I'm assigning different alpha maps to be triggered when these parts deform. Each part is very specific and involve only 1 UDIM tile, but I'm having to assign 16x16 all black textures in all the spare UDIM tiles, otherwise Blender won't reckognize that is about a UDIM, it will take it as a simple UV.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • I assign normal map textures to a UDIM mesh.
  • I create a mix node that will alternate between a normal texture set and another normal texture set which represents the deformed mesh.
  • I create a series of "mix" nodes, input them with alpha maps. Each of the maps refers to a single UDIM tile (for every independent spot that I want to deform). And output the last one to the "factor" of the preview thread mix node.
  • Blender won't reckognize a single UDIM tile alpha texture 'cause it needs the other tiles to complete the UDIM..

OBS: other shading softwares will reckognize a separate UDIM tile texture, without the need to input all the others as tiny bleck maps just to fullfill the rest of the UDIM set.
When I use so many texture is bad for the optimization, in spite they're just 16x16 bit textures, and for organization as well. And plus: when I input more than 10 texture tile sets Blender stops reckognizing the material in "material shading" view - the material turns purple.

This is almost true, Blender won't load UDIMs unless it finds a 1001 atm. Meaning that the 1002 isn't necessary if you need 1003.

But i totally get your point, and i've been forced to hack that in production aswell.

Thanks. I see, inputting only the .1001 is performance worth but not organization worth, at least to me. What is your work around for that can I ask?

Hmm.. great, I'll eagerly wait for the release! (don't like alpha and beta testing). Hope this works, and don't break every add-on from outside Blender like 3.0 did!!
