There are multiple tools that require the user to select a target to paint on. This could be a sculpt vertex layer or a texture map.

NOTE: As the selection needs to stick when switching tools this might be part of tool settings?

Development branch is temp-#96709-painting-target.

When one of the tools are selected that require a painting target

When a tool requires a painting target, a panel appears where the “paint target” can be selected. Panel should be a pop-over in the tool settings and available in the active tool settings (property editor/property side panel in the 3d view).

  • Image - Paint on a selected image.
Image to paint on can be selected or a new image can be created. UV map can be chosen.
  • Material - Paint on active material.
** Canvas referred to inside all material slots can be selected to paint on.
  • Color Attribute
** List of Color Attribute (Sculpt vertex colors) of the active object are shown, where user can select the active layer to paint on.

The paint target will be pre-filled when it isn’t set. Active material texture will be selected before the sculpt vertex colors.

Visible 3D Views that use the workbench engine should reflect the color type for the selected painting target.

  • Images (Source Image, Material) would use texture color type.
  • Color attributes (Source Color attribute, Material) colors would use vertex color type.

Brushes and Tools that require a painting target are:

  • Paint brush
  • Sample
  • Erase
  • Smear
  • Color filter
  • Blur
  • Clone

Clone tool only supports texture painting targets. Tool should not be visible when a texture isn’t selected as a painting target.

Open Questions

Q: Should we hide selection of sculpt vertex colors when the clone tool is active?

  • Automatically switch to other tool (bad design)
  • Painting target to sculpt vertex colors can be set, but when selected the tool would not have effect
  • It should not be possible to switch painting target to sculpt vertex colors. (Personally I prefer this one).

  • Input vertex color nodes should also be possible to select.
  • Put "everything" in a single list
  • Use term Color attribute

making the clone brush work also for sculpt vertex colors is not an option?
