System Information
Operating system: macOS-12.3.1-x86_64-i386-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT OpenGL Engine ATI Technologies Inc. 4.1 ATI-4.8.15
Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.1.2, branch: master, commit date: 2022-03-31 17:40, hash:
cc66d1020c
Worked: 3.0.1
Short description of error
After upgrading to OS monterey 12.3.1 and starting using blender 3.1 the mac freezes and restarts occasionally on projects. The same projects on 3.0.1 before the upgrade were working fine.
Does anyone else experience the same issue ?
The problems has already occurred on the following occasions (so far)
while rendering in cycles, I haven't tried eevee yet. (happened twice already - but usually the renders do finish)
while previewing certain parts of a shader, by connecting to the viewer different nodes (- on cycles render view)
while previewing different lighting settings (turning on and off collections) on the render view.
while opening a heavy project (this happened twice so far)
while going to render view
and last and most weird of all, while moving an object in the scene, on solid view, without anything else going on
Some of the above have happened with the metal support for both gpu and cpu off too.
Also so far I haven't managed to make them happen again on 3.0.1 (even on monterey)
The behaviour of the computer is either of the two:
Some times it also gives glitches on the screen (similar to the attached picture)
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Unfortunately I cannot provide a way to reproduce it as it happens on multiple projects and on a variety of ways. I hope the description above will provide enough information.

Those looks like kernel panics that are probably caused by a faulty GPU driver that is only correlated with the use of that particular version of Blender. Does MacOS display a message that "your computer was restarted because of a problem."? Are there any logs that you can provide? Unfortunately, your description does not provide enough information to properly debug the issue, so any information you can provide would be of great help.
Hello Omar
Thanks for the response,
Yes when it restarts there is that message.
When it logs me out there is no message, only the display glitches and freezes
Yes there were logs
I will attach a few of them here so you can tell me if these are the correct ones ( I found these via the console and in the Logs folder)
Any advice on how to avoid this behaviour would be amazing as blender 3.1 is a masterpiece!!
Thanks again!
Side note: Today I've been working all day on 3.0.1 on the same projects and nothing happened so far. I also intentionally overloading some of them to see if the problem will appear again but only blender crashed, not the Mac.

Seems to be the same issue in #87161.
