Caused by 90e12e823f

Short description of error
A file saved with an object in sculptmode that is disabled in viewports crashes on reload

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
from the default startup scen with factory defaults:

  • enter sculptmode on the default cube
  • disable the cube in viewports in the Outliner (monitor icon)
  • save the file somewhere
  • reload/revert the file
  • crash

Original report

Short description of error
I was working on a character asset, sculpted the low poly male character without an issue, selected the female character and switched to sculpt tab. When started to sculpt, blender crashed. Reopened the file, did the same things, crashed again. Now when I try to open the file, it immediately crashes, I cannot even see the UI before it crashes.

Switched to factory settings, tested on a previous build but nothing helped.

Send the file to a colleague to test, it crashed on his computer as well.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Trying to open the file from within blender or windows explorer. It crashes immediately.
Crash log and blend file is attached.

Can confirm.

This has to do with the fact that the Male object is in sculpmode and disabled in viewports (monitor icon in the Outliner) when saved.
Will check when this broke.

workaround for now: you can append the whole scene into a new fresh file, that should work for now

I've actually returned to a previous autosave, but would like to find a solution for when it occurs again.

like I said, you can append the whole scene (even in the broken state) into a new file as (temporary) solution

Philipp Oeser changed title from Blender crashes when launching a file that previously worked correctly. to Regression: file saved with an object in sculptmode that is disabled in viewports crashes on reload 2022-05-18 14:55:38 +02:00

@mont29 : setting this to High Prio (even though it is a bit dated), but it is just something not so nice to have...
