I use them often for IK switching, so that the keyframe captures the result of the constraint as the starting position for FK.
In fact I just don't understand the point of the keying from preferences thing. Only way it can be useful, is for animators like you, who want to key all three transforms at once. But why not…
Perhaps the pie menu above could only show the options of the current keying set. For example if the keying set is visual loc & rotation, then the pie menu would only show those two options.

oh actaully, I think it's because I had set up somewhere in preferences that the f3 menu searchs all operators. Just trying to find that option again.
