I use them often for IK switching, so that the keyframe captures the result of the constraint as the starting position for FK.

Eyedropper (also drag and drop) ignores unselectable IDs (e.g. objects marked unselectable in the Outliner or objects other than armatures in posemode with XRay turned ON)

The fade geometry shouldn't really be tied to whether the bones are in front? Incidentally geometry doesn't become transparent as suggested by the tooltip, it becomes black:
