6514bb05ea Mesh: Store active & default color attributes with strings
Attributes are unifying around a name-based API, and we would like to
be able to move away from CustomData in the future. This patch moves
the identification of active and fallback (render) color attributes
to strings on the mesh from flags on CustomDataLayer. This also
removes some ugliness used to retrieve these attributes and maintain
the active status.

The design is described more here: T98366

The patch keeps forward compatibility working until 4.0 with
the same method as the mesh struct of array refactors (T95965).

The strings are allowed to not correspond to an attribute, to allow
setting the active/default attribute independently of actually filling
its data. When applying a modifier, if the strings don't match an
attribute, they will be removed.

The realize instances / join node and join operator take the names from
the first / active input mesh. While other heuristics may be helpful
(and could be a future improvement), just using the first is simple
and predictable.

75ad8da1ea Refactor: Replace old Mesh edge split implementation
Recently a new geometry node for splitting edges was added in D16399.
However, there was already a similar implementation in mesh.cc that was
mainly used to fake auto smooth support in Cycles by splitting sharp
edges and edges around sharp faces.

While there are still possibilities for optimization in the new code,
the implementation is safer and simpler, multi-threaded, and aligns
better with development plans for caching topology on Mesh and other
recent developments with attributes.

This patch removes the old code and moves the node implementation to
the geometry module so it can be used in editors and RNA. The "free
loop normals" argument is deprecated now, since it was only an internal
optimization exposed for Cycles.

The new mesh `editors` function creates an `IndexMask` of edges to
split by reusing some of the code from the corner normal calculation.

This change will help to simplify the changes in D16530 and T102858.

0d945fe20e Fix deprecation warnings about printf() on macOS
The new Xcode 14.1 brings the new Apple Clang compiler which
considers sprintf unsafe and geenrates deprecation warnings
suggesting to sue snprintf instead. This only happens for C++
code by default, and C code can still use sprintf without any
warning.

This changes does the following:

- Whenever is trivial replace sprintf() with BLI_snprintf.
- For all other cases use the newly introduced BLI_sprintf
  which is a wrapper around sprintf() but without warning.

There is a discouragement note in the BLI_sprintf comment to
suggest use of BLI_snprintf when the size is known.

f17fbf8065 Refactor: Rename Object->obmat to Object->object_to_world
Motivation is to disambiguate on the naming level what the matrix
actually means. It is very easy to understand the meaning backwards,
especially since in Python the name goes the opposite way (it is
called `world_matrix` in the Python API).

It is important to disambiguate the naming without making developers
to look into the comment in the header file (which is also not super
clear either). Additionally, more clear naming facilitates the unit
verification (or, in this case, space validation) when reading an
expression.

This patch calls the matrix `object_to_world` which makes it clear
from the local code what is it exactly going on. This is only done
on DNA level, and a lot of local variables still follow the old
naming.

A DNA rename is setup in a way that there is no change on the file
level, so there should be no regressions at all.

The possibility is to add `_matrix` or `_mat` suffix to the name
to make it explicit that it is a matrix. Although, not sure if it
really helps the readability, or is it something redundant.

68589a31eb ViewLayer: Lazy sync of scene data.
When a change happens which invalidates view layers the syncing will be postponed until the first usage.
This will improve importing or adding many objects in a single operation/script.

`BKE_view_layer_need_resync_tag` is used to tag the view layer to be out of sync. Before accessing
`BKE_view_layer_active_base_get`, `BKE_view_layer_active_object_get`, `BKE_view_layer_active_collection`
or `BKE_view_layer_object_bases` the caller should call `BKE_view_layer_synced_ensure`.

Having two functions ensures that partial syncing could be added as smaller patches in the future. Tagging a
view layer out of sync could be replaced with a partial sync. Eventually the number of full resyncs could be
reduced. After all tagging has been replaced with partial syncs the ensure_sync could be phased out.

This patch has been added to discuss the details and consequences of the current approach. For clarity
the call to BKE_view_layer_ensure_sync is placed close to the getters.
In the future this could be placed in more strategical places to reduce the number of calls or improve
performance. Finding those strategical places isn't that clear. When multiple operations are grouped
in a single script you might want to always check for resync.

Some areas found that can be improved. This list isn't complete.
These areas aren't addressed by this patch as these changes would be hard to detect to the reviewer.
The idea is to add changes to these areas as a separate patch. It might be that the initial commit would reduce
performance compared to master, but will be fixed by the additional patches.

**Object duplication**
During object duplication the syncing is temporarily disabled. With this patch this isn't useful as when disabled
the view_layer is accessed to locate bases. This can be improved by first locating the source bases, then duplicate
and sync and locate the new bases. Will be solved in a separate patch for clarity reasons ({D15886}).

**Object add**
`BKE_object_add` not only adds a new object, but also selects and activates the new base. This requires the
view_layer to be resynced. Some callers reverse the selection and activation (See `get_new_constraint_target`).
We should make the selection and activation optional. This would make it possible to add multiple objects
without having to resync per object.

**Postpone Activate Base**
Setting the basact is done in many locations. They follow a rule as after an action find the base and set
the basact. Finding the base could require a resync. The idea is to store in the view_layer the object which
base will be set in the basact during the next sync, reducing the times resyncing needs to happen.

be038b844c Cleanup: Tweak naming for recently added mesh accessors
Use `verts` instead of `vertices` and `polys` instead of `polygons`
in the API added in 05952aa94d. This aligns better with
existing naming where the shorter names are much more common.

05952aa94d Mesh: Remove redundant custom data pointers
For copy-on-write, we want to share attribute arrays between meshes
where possible. Mutable pointers like `Mesh.mvert` make that difficult
by making ownership vague. They also make code more complex by adding
redundancy.

The simplest solution is just removing them and retrieving layers from
`CustomData` as needed. Similar changes have already been applied to
curves and point clouds (e9f82d3dc7, 410a6efb74). Removing use of
the pointers generally makes code more obvious and more reusable.

Mesh data is now accessed with a C++ API (`Mesh::edges()` or
`Mesh::edges_for_write()`), and a C API (`BKE_mesh_edges(mesh)`).

The CoW changes this commit makes possible are described in T95845
and T95842, and started in D14139 and D14140. The change also simplifies
the ongoing mesh struct-of-array refactors from T95965.

**RNA/Python Access Performance**
Theoretically, accessing mesh elements with the RNA API may become
slower, since the layer needs to be found on every random access.
However, overhead is already high enough that this doesn't make a
noticible differenc, and performance is actually improved in some
cases. Random access can be up to 10% faster, but other situations
might be a bit slower. Generally using `foreach_get/set` are the best
way to improve performance. See the differential revision for more
discussion about Python performance.

Cycles has been updated to use raw pointers and the internal Blender
mesh types, mostly because there is no sense in having this overhead
when it's already compiled with Blender. In my tests this roughly
halves the Cycles mesh creation time (0.19s to 0.10s for a 1 million
face grid).

d901f8b75b Fix T98960: Baking to active color attribute uses wrong layer
Baking assumed that color attributes could only have two configurations:
float color data type on vertices, or byte color type on face corners.
In reality the options can be combined to make four total options.
This commit handles the four cases explicitly with a somewhat
more scaleable approach (though this should really be C++ code).

This commit also changes some related error messages, tooltips,
and an enum name, in order to make the functionality more obvious.

f4456a4d3c Expose background job info to Python
Add `bpy.app.is_job_running(job_type)` as high-level indicator. Job
types currently exposed are `WM_JOB_TYPE_RENDER`,
`WM_JOB_TYPE_RENDER_PREVIEW`, and `WM_JOB_TYPE_OBJECT_BAKE`, as strings
with the `WM_JOB_TYPE_` prefix removed. The functions can be polled by
Python code to determine whether such background work is still ongoing
or not.

Furthermore, new app handles are added for
`object_bake_{pre,complete,canceled}`, which are called respectively
before an object baking job starts, completes sucessfully, and stops due
to a cancellation.

Motivation: There are various cases where Python can trigger the
execution of a background job, without getting notification that that
background job is done. As a result, it's hard to do things like
cleanups, or auto-quitting Blender after the work is done.

The approach in this commit can easily be extended with other job types,
when the need arises. The rendering of asset previews is one that's
likely to be added sooner than later, as there have already been
requests about this.

cf69652618 Cleanup: Use const when retrieving custom data layers
Knowing when layers are retrieved for write access will be essential
when adding proper copy-on-write support. This commit makes that
clearer by adding `const` where the retrieved data is not modified.

6787cc13d4 Bake: add UDIM tile baking support
Works for both Cycles and multires bake. Triangles are baked to multiple
UDIM images if they span across them, though such UV layouts are generally
discouraged as there is no filtering across UDIM tiles.

The bake margin currently only works within UDIM tiles. For the extend method
this is logical, for the adjacent faces method it may be useful to support
copying pixels from other UDIM tiles, though this seems somewhat complicated.

03ec505fa5 Cleanup: Rename CD_MLOOPCOL to CD_PROP_BYTE_COLOR
The "PROP" in the name reflects its generic status, and removing
"LOOP" makes sense because it is no longer associated with just
mesh face corners. In general the goal is to remove extra semantic
meaning from the custom data types.

811371a6bd Fix T96942: disable Adjacent Faces margin for UVs and tangent space bake
Use the Extend method for these, as these do not work correctly. For UVs
it's better to extend the UVs from the same face, and for tangent space
the normals should be encoded in a matching tangent space.

Later the Adjacent Faces method might be improved to support these cases.

eae36be372 Refactor: Unify vertex and sculpt colors into new
color attribute system.

This commit removes sculpt colors from experimental
status and unifies it with vertex colors. It
introduces the concept of "color attributes", which
are any attributes that represents colors.  Color
attributes can be represented with byte or floating-point
numbers and can be stored in either vertices or
face corners.

Color attributes share a common namespace
(so you can no longer have a floating-point
sculpt color attribute and a byte vertex color
attribute with the same name).

Note: this commit does not include vertex paint mode,
      which is a separate patch, see:

6e4d2fa914 Cleanup: add image_format.cc for functions related to ImageFormatData
Also fixes missing code to read/write/free/copy color management settings
in various places. This can't be set through the UI currently, but still
should be handled consistently.

0781c22cee Fix T95969, T91856: bake AO to vertex color artifacts after ray offset removal
Without ray offsets intersections at neigbhoring triangles are found, as
the ray start is exactly at the vertex. There was a small offset towards
the center of the triangle, but not enough.

Now this offset computation is moved into Cycles and modified for better
results. It's still not perfect though like any offset approach, especially
with long thin triangles.

Additionaly, this uses the shadow terminate offset for AO rays now, which
helps remove some pre-existing artifacts.

ddf189892c Cleanup: Rename original curve object type enum
This commit renames enums related the "Curve" object type and ID type
to add `_LEGACY` to the end. The idea is to make our aspirations clearer
in the code and to avoid ambiguities between `CURVE` and `CURVES`.

To summarize for the record, the plans are:
- In the short/medium term, replace the `Curve` object data type with
 `Curves`
- In the longer term (no immediate plans), use a proper data block for
  3D text and surfaces.

c434782e3a File headers: SPDX License migration
Use a shorter/simpler license convention, stops the header taking so
much space.

While most of the source tree has been included

- `./extern/` was left out.
- `./intern/cycles` & `./intern/atomic` are also excluded because they

doc/license/SPDX-license-identifiers.txt has been added to list SPDX all
used identifiers.

8ad5241778 Fix T95250: bake margin adjacent faces uses stale UV map in edit mode
Use the evaluated mesh to generate the Adjacent Faces margin.

Baking used the evaluated mesh, but generating the margin used the base
mesh. This would lead to generating the margin from a stale UV map when the
UV editor was open and the UV map was changed. Fix it by passing the same
mesh as used for baking through to the margin generation.

449db0ab1e Baking: new method to generate margin, based on adjacent faces
This significantly reduces discontinuities on UV seams, by giving a better
match of the texture filtered colors on both sides of the seam. It works by
using pixels from adjacent faces across the UV seam.

This new option is called "Adjacent Faces" and is the default. The old option
is called "Extend", and extends border pixels outwards.

0c3b215e7d Images: refactor how failed image load attempts are remembered
Previously, `ImageTile->ok` and `ImageUser->ok` were used to indicate
whether an image failed to load. There were three possible values
which (probably) had the following meanings:
* `0`: There was an error while loading the image. Don't try to load again.
* `1`: Default value. Try to load the image.
* `2`: The image was loaded successfully.

This image-wide flag did not make sense unfortunately, because loading
may work for some frames of an image sequence but not for others.
Remember than an image data block can also contain a movie.

The purpose of the `->ok` flag was to serve as an optimization to avoid
trying to load a file over and over again when there is an error (e.g. the
file does not exist or is invalid). To get the optimization back, the patch
is changing `MovieCache` so that it can also cache failed load attempts.
As a consequence, `ibuf` is allowed to be `NULL` in a few more places.
I added the appropriate null checks.

This also solves issues when image sequences are used with the
Image Texture node in Geometry nodes (also see D12827).

0803119725 Cycles: merge of cycles-x branch, a major update to the renderer
This includes much improved GPU rendering performance, viewport interactivity,
new shadow catcher, revamped sampling settings, subsurface scattering anisotropy,
new GPU volume sampling, improved PMJ sampling pattern, and more.

Some features have also been removed or changed, breaking backwards compatibility.
Including the removal of the OpenCL backend, for which alternatives are under
development.

8abf6efcf6 Cleanup: rename restrict to hide/visibility in Object, Collection, MaskLayer
This makes the internal naming consistent with the public API. And also gives
us a visibility_flag rather than restrictflag that can be extended with more
flags.

960337f17a Fix T86455: vertex color baking issue with sculpt vertex colors
Baking to Vertex Colors would always bake to sculpt vertex colors (if
such a layer is present) even if those are not enabled in the
experimental preferences. This would bake without an error but leave the
user without a result to look in the viewport.

Now check if sculpt vertex colors are enabled and only bake to them in
that case.

9febda912b Baking: support vertex color baking of normal material, UV discontinuities
Baking vertex colors per-corner leads to unwanted discontinuities when there is
sampling noise, for example in ambient occlusion or with a bevel shader node for
normals. For this reason the code used to always average results per-vertex.

However when using split normals, multiple materials or UV islands, we do want to
preserve discontinuities. So now bake per corner, but make sure the sampling seed
is shared for vertices.
