Short description of error
in 2d animation i tried to import a png file as a plane and it switched to object mode and erased my paint mode. i tried making a new file and it was back but when i imported another file it did it again.
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
click file, import, images as planes, choose a png file. now paint mode is gone

Cannot reproduce in Blender 3.4 and latest master. Could give us more details? (Used NVidia GTX Card).
It does return to object mode when importing image as a plane and ig this is expected. Paint Mode (or what you are refering you to exactly, please elaborate) is thereby exited. New Object added, and fully visible with minimum viewport shading.
