Deleting a branch is permanent. Although the deleted branch may continue to exist for a short time before it actually gets removed, it CANNOT be undone in most cases. Continue?
The 3ds import/export addon is now fixed for Blender 3.x and would be ready to get moved from contrib to official. It can import and export a lot more than in former versions, most features are listed here: D7454
