The only error wich can happen is if your mesh has too many faces (triangles). 3ds is a legacy format wich only supports 65535 triangles per mesh. If you have too big meshes, try split them in more objects. A good method is "Mesh->Seperate->by Material" if the mesh contains multiple materials.
