Short description of error
Unable to add Texture to an imported STL file
Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Based on a (as simple as possible) attached .blend file with minimum amount of steps
Following the procedures outlined in 3 Tutorials and 2 manuals the operation stops at the point of UNWRAPPING the object.
When you press "U" the option for UNWRAPPING does not appear, is greyed out, or the menu does not appear at all.
Have not been able to identify any rhyme or reason behind the above actions, sometimes it does other times it doesn't.
Manually attempting to select vertices selects the entire object.
At time it appears to be working normally when using CYCLES RENDERING, however no texture is appearing on a saved of exported file.
Suspect that the imported object is not a MESH object

hi could you provide a test file please?
also does the imported stl have faces? or only verts? if it has only verts/points it may explain why the uv mapping is greyed out.
I am attaching 2 files the first (Test.stl) is a single object that is 57.5” x 6.5” x 1.75” (x, y, z) and has one vertices at 0, 0, 0.
The second (Table.stl) is also a single object as AutoCAD joins all the pieces together when it exports an .stl format.
As you will notice the objects are quite large in Blender as I have yet to determine the scaling factor to use.
As I stated this does appear to apply the texture but when I export a Collada file the texture is not there. I am using this as an input to Second Life.
I think you are right about not having faces as I stated in the problem report when I select any vertices the entire object selects. This happens when I attempt to select an edge or a face.
I can’t think of any other information to add, if you have further questions please do not hesitate to ask.
Thank You for your time and effort,
Test.stl

Hi, is this task resolved?
I tried to reproduce what you mentioned, but it seems to be working fine. Maybe I understood your problem wrong?
What I did is this :
The option for unwrap did show up and I could also unwrap the object. Is there something I am missing?

I was able to import and unwrap the STL files using today's 2.83 daily build.
Closing as resolved.
