I'm sorry for the quite technical bug report, the form to be filled somewhat led me to the result above.
However, I'm new to blender and tried to prevent doing stupid beginner's mistakes, but can't promise success.
In the end I only want a nice image and an stl file for my molecule so I can 3D-print it.
I'd really appreciate help from you

I can reproduce if I attempt to import while in Edit mode. If in Object mode, it works fine, so for now make sure you're in Object mode before you import. Could be fixed by having the addon switch to Object mode at the beginning.

Scurest (scurest) is absolutely right: the user has to be in the 'Object mode' and not in the 'Edit mode'. I will see the next days how to have the addon switch to 'Object mode' at the beginning of the import.
Today, I changed the code such that the user is now in the 'OBJECT' mode, independent on what she/he has chosen before.

Thank you very much, this was of course a beginner's problem, but none where you can by thinking find the solution.
I hope it makes usage easier for others!
Thanks again for the quick replies and the "real fix" :-)
Tim, you are welcome, np. For any questions and problems, just post, may be also here: Blenderartists . And sorry for the late replies and coding ... ;-)
PS: Since I have the rights ... I marked the thread as 'solved'.
