On this page it says:

"When you link an object, it will be placed in your scene at the 3D cursor position. Many other data types, cameras, curves, and materials for example, must be linked to an object before they become visible."

However, I find that this is not always the case? At least if an "object" are any of those instances found in the "Object" folder of the blender file being linked to.

I suggest expanding on this paragraph in the manual, so it explains linked instances a bit better (I am new to Blender, but this my current understanding):

By linking to an object contained in another Blender file, you will only have to update the original object to have the changes propagate to all blender files linked to it. This is of course very useful if you want to ensure consistency between files. How the linked instance behave however, depends on how the blender file containing the original is organised, and what you linked to in your current blender file:

  1. If you link to an object directly, it will be linked with its translations—including location and rotation, which means the linked instance cannot be moved or rotated. It will appear in the same location as in the linked blender file.

  2. For the linked object to appear at the location of the 3D cursor, you will have to put the object(s) you want to link to (eg. a box) in a collection—and then link to the collection.

  3. Furthermore, by linking to the collection containing the desired object(s), you will also be able to move and rotate the object(s)—as you are in fact moving, rotating or translating the entire collection.
