Currently the [navigation section ]] mostly consists of information about the 3D View, which will soon be moved to the [ http:*blender.org/manual/editors/3dview/index.html | Editors chapter .

All that needs to be mentioned is how to actually navigate the 3D space - i.e:

  • MMB to orbit, Shift-MMB to pan, etc.
  • Mention that other Editors use these controls too
  • Difference between perspective and orthographic, keyboard shortcuts for different view (front, side, top...)

What should not be included:

  • Placement of the camera (this is already in /render/camera section)
  • Layers (will be included in 3D View chapter)
  • Local View
  • Clipping border (Alt-B)

Since there is so little that needs to be said about navigation, the whole folder can be removed and replaced with a single file (/getting_started/basics/navigation.rst)

I wonder if perhaps it might make more sense to put 3D view specific things in the 3D view section, and only keep generic things here?
Not being sure what changes are planned regarding re-shuffling navigation and editor pages I can't tell if this would be logical or not..

Agree with the initial comments in the task:

Suggest:

  • Move /basics/navigating /editors/3dview/navigation
  • Add single page navigation section into /basics/navigation, which can just cover the very common view navigation, and link to the view3d section for further reading.

Note that having a basics section conflicts somewhat with plan to only maintain a reference manual. Since most basic areas of Blender, end up having more advanced aspects.

Even so, if we can keep basics scope limited, think its fine to keep.
