In the 2.92 manuel, in
Modeling/Sculpting & Painting/Modes/Weight Paint/Using Vertex Groups/Vertex Groups for Bones
It is said:
I think in 2.92 Blender version that's impossible.
Instead you have to select the armature in object mode and add the mesh object to the selection, and change immediately to Weight Paint Mode.

This should be fixed with rBM7784 can you confirm that the behavior described in the 2.93 user manual: https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/2.93/ works as expected.
Actually the issue is in the manuel.
You have to exit the Pose Mode to select a Mesh object in the 2.8 and 2.9 Blender versions.
First you select the armature, you don't bring it to Pose Mode,
instead you add the Mesh to the selection to set it the active object
and you change from Object Mode to Weight Paint Mode and then the description in the manuel is correct.
The issue of the manuel I want to report is not how to select the bones while Weight painting
That has been effectively fixed in rBM7784.
But to be able to select the bones in the weight Paint mode of the mesh,
the armature must be "activated" in some way and the way described in the manuel is wrong in my opinion.

Rectification: It is impossible to select the mesh as described in the Manuel (Sculpting & Painting/Modes/Weight Paint/Using Vertex Groups/Vertex Groups for Bones)
if you don't uncheck Lock Object Mode in the edit menu. If you uncheck it it works effectively. As it is checked by default, maybe a note about that would be useful.
Added Lock Object Mode to the list of steps, and updated the part where it says to select bones with Ctrl-LMB because this has apparently changed to Ctrl-Shift-LMB in 4.0.
