System Information
Operating system: win 10
Graphics card: RTX 2060 6GO

Blender Version
Broken: Since 3.2.2 and HIGHER Like 3.3 BETA and 3.4 alpha
Worked: 3.2.1 and older

Short description of error
Blender is unresponsive when the AO nodes draw the result in the viewport.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  • Create a material
  • Assign an AO node to the base color
  • Ensure that Cycles is used as render engine and device is set to GPU
  • Switch to the render view
It either renders nothing or becomes unresponsive.

  • Which render engine are you using, Eevee or Cycles?
  • If you are using Cycles, do you have GPU rendering enabled?
  • Does this crash with the default cube or is a specific scene required?

Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Try to make Blender crash again. Once it crashes the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information. Add them to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below or via drag and drop. Please also upload the crash log located in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\[project name].crash.txt (or simply type %TEMP% into the path bar of the Windows Explorer).

Cycles, this node is only avalaible (working) in cycles, and i'am on GPU mode, i don't have any crash logs just the program are stuck on no-responding.

Test by yourself

@dodo-2 I've tested it in 3.2.2, 3.3.0 beta (c2c019dda8) and 3.4.0 alpha (b5e92c3dfe) without any apparent issues.

Even if Blender only becomes unresponsive rather than actually crashing, please still run blender_debug_gpu.cmd as instructed above. Once Blender freezes you can terminate the program and upload the debug log and system information. These log files may help us identify why Blender becomes unresponsive on your system.

@dodo-2 Could you please check if this issue still occurs in the current version Blender 3.3 or 3.4? If yes, please provide the log files as instructed above.

This is happening to me also - add an AO node to the Prinicpled BSDF shader and crashing. Tested on 3.2 and works fine.

I am also experiencing this. It even happens in a new blend file.

Windows 10, RTX 2060 Super, Blender 3.3.1.

My steps to always reproduce are as follows:
Create a material
Assign an AO node to the base color of the Principled BSDF (although this also fails if you plug straight into the Surface input of the Material Output node).
Ensure that Cycles is used as render engine and device is set to GPU
Switch to the render view

Blender will now say "Loading render kernels" in the upper left of the viewport. This never seems to finish. The viewport is still responsive. However, if you attempt to do certain actions, like switch the CPU rendering or to another shading mode like solid or wireframe, Blender hangs for a minute or two and eventually seems to recover.

EDIT: This problem suddenly stopped appearing for me. I can't figure out what changed as I was able to reproduce several times in a row, but now I cannot get it to occur at all. I will follow up if anything changes.

EDIT 2: I was able to get a co-worker to reproduce this on a separate PC, same hardware. It seems as though if you let Blender recover from the hang, it fixes the problem even after closing and re-opening.

AO.mp4
I have exactly the same problem, when using optix on rtx 3090, when cycles are enabled, blender freezes, blender version 3.3.2 LTS
I recorded the problem on video, it's easier to explain.
I waited for the shader to compile, but any material to which AO is applied automatically disappears from the render
