Blender 3.2.1 Recent Files List Not Updating #100690

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 SUPER/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 497.29

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.2.1, branch: master, commit date: 2022-07-05 15:44, hash: a2d59b2dac
Worked: (newest version of Blender that worked as expected) Blender 3.1.2

Short description of error
The Recent Files list on the splash screen is not updating with the most recent files. File - Open Recent is also not updating with most recent files. Recover Last Session does open last file.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  Open Blender 3.2.1.
Create a file, or open an existing file.
  Make changes.
Ctrl-S or File - Save or File - Save As to save the file (can be the same file name or a different one)
  Close Blender.
Reopen Blender -- splash screen does not update with most recent file, and File - Open Recent does not list the most recent file either.

All add-ons have been disabled, including Blender add-ons (Node Wrangler, Bool Tools, etc.).
Apples_04.blend257 KBDownload

This issue occurs whether starting with an existing file or creating a new file from scratch.

File can be as simple as a single Suzanne mesh or as complicated as an entire ArchVis scene -- same result. Tested with multiple different files in multiple locations to be sure the issue was not with any single .blend file or folder location.

Opening the same file(s) in the older Blender 3.1.2 results in the Recent Files list updating as expected.

NOTE: This is the second time I am reporting this bug. Previous report (https://developer.blender.org/T99971) was closed due to inactivity, because I am unable to reset my Blender installation to factory settings. Please do not ask.Apples_04.blend

Also please note: I am an intermediate Blender USER, not a developer. I do not understand "developer-speak." I am just a student 3D artist having an issue with my Blender installation not remembering the most recent Blend file I worked on, which has not happened before (i.e. it did not happen with Blender 2.9, 2.91, 2.92, 3.0, 3.1, or 3.1.2).

Here are screenshots taken after working on "Apples_11.blend" this morning, which does not show up in the Recent Files list.

The files that do show up in the Recent Files list are ones that I did, in fact, work on recently (last week), but the list does not include the MOST recent one from this morning.

The recent files directory is written to recent-files.txt which is located in C:\Users\[your username]\Roaming\Blender Foundation\Blender\3.2\config.
Whenever a .blend file is opened, its directory is added to this list.
But why this list is not being updated in your case, we don't know :\

Could it be that you are opening blender in different versions without noticing?
Did you change the Recent Files number in preferences to 0?
Could it be that windows is preventing blender from writing to the file (this is hard to happen without other problems)?

Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files.
Try to reproduce the error again. Once you close Blender manually the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information.
Add them to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below or via drag and drop.

Could it be that you are opening blender in different versions without noticing? -- No, I use the exact same shortcut icon on my taskbar to open it every time.
Did you change the Recent Files number in preferences to 0? My Recent Files number is set to 5.
Could it be that windows is preventing blender from writing to the file (this is hard to happen without other problems)? If that were the case, why would it save the recent files sometimes but not other times? Please see my previous screenshots as well as my post above from Monday, Aug 29 9:18 a.m.

Try to reproduce the error again. There is no "reproducing" it. It happens when I open Blender, as described in my original post.blender_debug_output.txt

Unfortunately there is nothing in the logs indicating what might be happening.

My Recent Files number is set to 5.

This is something relevant that should be mentioned in the description. The default value is 10. It would be good to identify changes in preferences that might be related.

There is no "reproducing" it. It happens when I open Blender, as described in my original post.

Does the problem always occur, or is it just occasionally?
If it is occasionally, make sure that when opening a file, it does not appear among the recent files.

I'm out of ideas. Could you attach the recent-files.txt file one time before and another time after you open a few different files?

Thank you, Germano. I will make a note to get back to this in a few days -- currently have to address other urgent issues so Blender is on hold.

  1. Number of recent files was changed many Blender versions ago. When I update Blender, I import previous settings.

  2. This issue only occurs randomly; i.e. sometimes my recent file IS saved (I've explained this previously), sometimes it is not. So it works sometimes but not all the time.

I've provided screenshots demonstrating the issue.

I am still dealing with the urgent issue, but will try to upload a before and after recent-files.txt as soon as I can.

Apologies for not getting back to this sooner, but I've been recovering from oral surgery.

I have just installed 3.3.1 and it does not seem to have the issue, so I'm going to just go with that.

Probably the problem disappeared with the restored settings.

So something in the preferences must have caused the issue.

But without knowing which setting did this and without details of how to reproduce the problem, it would not be easy to track down the cause, confirm the bug and work on a fix.

So thanks again for the report, but doesn't currently looking like we are work on this. If the problem persists please open a new report with the required information.
