System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19043-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: GeForce GTX 1070/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 436.50

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.3.2, 3.4, caused by 5d67b52441
Worked: 3.2.2

Short description of error
When geometry nodes are present and separate parts by material. A copy location constraint for another object that is set to copy the location of a vertex is not working.

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
copy_location_genodes_not_working.blend

  • Start blender
  • Select the default cube and tab into edit mode.
  • shift-A and add cone and move it up.
  • Select the top vertex and assign it to a vertex group. Name the group Cone_tip.
    cube_and_cone.jpg
  • Tab out of edit mode.
  • Create two materials. Assign one of them to the cone and the other to the cube.
    different_materials.JPG
  • Add a geometry node modifier.
  • Separate the parts by material and then join them together.
    geometry_nodes.JPG
  • Select the light
  • Add an object constraint, copy location.
  • Set the cube as Target and Cone_tip as Vertex Group.
  • Notice the error. The light is at the geometry origin, and not at the cone tip. It does not respect the vertex group.

Now you can save the blend file. Then open it with blender 3.2.2. Notice the location of the light. It's at the cone tip where you expect it to be.

You can also open the attached blend file in blender 3.3 and 3.2.2 and see the different location of the light.

You can also open the attached blend file in blender 3.3 and 3.2.2 and see the different location of the light.

I cannot reproduce this with either the latest stable or current development versions of Blender:

Please try the latest daily build: https://builder.blender.org/download/

Go to File → Defaults → Load Factory Settings and then load your file to see if you still can reproduce this issue.

If the problem persists, please give us more clear instructions on how to reproduce it from scratch.

I still have the error. Even with loading default factory settings, stable builds for 3.3, or 3.4 alpha.
I uploaded a video. I hope it's clear what I'm doing and the unexpected result. I expect the light to stay at the vertex group.
I can't see I'm doing something odd or wrong so I'm surprised it's not reproducible.
