Viewer Node does not initialize from within Compositor node group #102240

Short description of error

Viewer node does not work if used for the very first time inside a compositor node group. Once the user goes back to the top level composite and connects a Viewer Node, it works, and then updates normally when going back into node groups.

Reproduce from a file

viewerNodeNotWorkingInNodeGroup.blend

  • Add a viewer node for the Image node output.
  • Notice how the backdrop and the Viewer image doesn't get initialize with the viewer content.
  • Go back to the top level node tree and add a viewer node.
  • Notice how the viewer is initialized.
  • Go back inside the node group.
  • Notice how it updates correctly, so it is only for the first time.

Reproduce from scratch

  • New General file
  • Hit 0 and F12 to render one frame of the default cube
  • Change to Composite tab
  • Change top view to Image Editor
  • Pick dropdown and select Viewer Node
  • In compositor panel Shift-A to add a greenscreen image
  • Shift-A to add a Keyer node
  • PIck a green color to key it
  • Add Scale node, set to Fit and Render Size
  • Connect Keyer Image output to Scale node
  • Add Alpha Over node. Connect Render Layers to Alpha Over Background input and Scale node to Foreground input
  • Select Image, Keying, Scale, and Alpha Over nodes.
  • Ctrl-G to Group
  • Make sure Node Wrangler is enabled.
  • Inside the group. select the Image node.
  • Ctrl-Shift-LMB to add a Viewer and connect it
  • Note that Viewer Node display in Image Editor does not update.
  • Press Tab to go up one level.
  • Highlight Render Layers and press Ctrl-Shift-LMB. Now render layer is shown in Viewer Node.
  • Highlight Node Group and press Tab to go in.
  • Now image viewer is working and active.

Yes, the behavior with the CPU compositor & Viewer Node not initializing is still there in today's daily build. (Thanks for the O shortcut fix for the Viewport compositor!)

I notice that the Viewer node is square when I first connect it to a node inside a node group. It only gets the aspect ratio of the rendered comp after it's connected to the top level Render Layers, at which point it's somehow initialized.

This bug isn't a showstopper. I'd prefer to get the rest of the nodes ported to the Viewport Compositor. The update speed is everything.
