Short description of error
Attempting to build blender from master on an M1 MacBook, I encountered this error when running
make
:Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
Install miniconda from Brew and add it to PATH so it is your default Python. Running
python3
should look like this:Follow the steps at https://wiki.blender.org/wiki/Building_Blender/Mac up to running
make
.Observe the error.
This appears to be caused by build_files/utils/make_update.py:62, which calls
platform.machine()
to determine what architecture it is running on. However, the miniconda Python binary is an x86_64 binary which runs seamlessly via macOS' Rosetta compatibility layer.Python doesn't yet handle this very intuitively in the
platform
module, andplatform.machine()
returns x86_64 rather than arm64. See:This causes the script to download the wrong set of libs and so the build fails.
