OPTIX fails to load kernel cache error on 2 GPUs loading kernel error 7013 OPTIX_ERROR_DISK_CACHE_INVALID_DATA #102628

System Information
Operating system: WINDOWS 10 64 pro
Graphics card: NVIDIA 2080ti and 2080

Blender Version
Broken: 3.5, 3.4, even tested back to 2.93
Worked: worked with 3.3 months ago

Short description of error
2 GPUs selected in preferences Cycles Render Devices OPTIX, if I try to render or switch to render preview in viewport,
I get the error "loading kernel error 7013 OPTIX_ERROR_DISK_CACHE_INVALID_DATA"

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error
2 GPUs selected in preferences Cycles Render Devices OPTIX
When trying to render with OPTIX, in viewport or F12, it used to crash.
I deleted the cache because it has been recommended in other tickets I have read.
Now it doesn't crash anymore, but says "loading kernel error 7013 OPTIX_ERROR_DISK_CACHE_INVALID_DATA"
When I only use 1 GPU, OPTIX works if I delete the OPTIX cache in AppData NVIDIA
(if I have 1 GPU selected in OPTIX, I delete the cache and OPTIX works on that card, if I switch to the other GPU in OPTIX and delete the cache, it also works... But, if I check BOTH GPUs in OPTIX, delete the cache and run render, error comes up).
I have tested older versions of Blender, the same happens, it also happens if I use Luxcore, same error message.
It seems that the OPTIX CACHE cannot be built for 2 GPUs anymore, but it used to work.
(I have already tried other NVIDIA drivers STUDIO and GAMEREADY drivers, same error)

Does this happen in all files? Even the default startup file?
It is interesting that this happens to LuxCore as well. Can you double check that you have the latest Nvidia drivers installed?

Please open Blender's installation directory and double click on the blender_debug_gpu.cmd. This will start Blender in debug mode and create log files. Try to reproduce the error again. Once it crashes or you close Blender manually the Windows Explorer should open and show you up to two files, a debug log and the system information. Add them to your bug report by clicking on the upload button as shown in the screenshot below or via drag and drop. Please also upload the crash log located in C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\Temp\[project name].crash.txt (or simply type %TEMP% into the path bar of the Windows Explorer).2019_12_04_upload_icon_developer_blender_org.png

@pmoursnv, maybe something broke in the driver, some issue where compiling for the same architecture twice causes a problem? Or we have to do something on our side to prevent the problem?

Had This problem too. It looks like at some point it broke in the driver. Nvidia driver in optix. Tested November and October 2022. Doesn't work in either of them. Same error optix_error_disk_cache_invalid_data. Tested driver 497.29 from December 2021. Works fine. Seems to have broken some time after that. Anyone know where to report this to Nvidia?

@AdamWalton, Patrick is a developer at NVIDIA, let's see what he says.

This looks like a bug that was recently addressed, so I expect this to be fixed with the next Studio driver release (beginning of next month IIRC). Only occurs when the two GPUs are different models, but on the same general architecture (as appears to be the case here with 1 2080Ti and 1 2080).

We can confirm this. We tried running a 3080 TI and a 3060 together in one system. With Studio drivers 526.98 (2022-11-16) and 522.30 (2022-10-18) we would get the error related to the optix cache. We removed the files in %localappdata%\NVIDIA\OptixCache and installed Studio driver 517.40 (2022-09-20). This driver does not seem to have the problem. We also tested some older drivers (517.40 516.93 512.59) where the problem also did not occur.

Ok, I'll mark this as a known issue then while we wait for the new driver release. Workaround is to use the older driver version.

Ok, thanks for the fast and accurate answers. My question now is, what happens with this ticket? Can we close it already, or will it stay open until I can confirm that the new upcoming NVIDIA studio drivers corrected the bug?

I'll leave it open until the issue is fixed in the driver, so that we have a place to merge similar reports and don't forget to check it at some point.

Ok, thanks. Seeing the time-frame I hope to report in December or January

Hi

The bug was solved. The new NVIDIA STUDIO driver 527.56 downloaded and installed today as solved the issue (OPTIX with 2 different GPUs working in CYCLES 3.5). Thanks for your support.
