Crashing while viewing animation in Cycles #103204

System Information
Operating system: macOS-13.0.1-arm64-arm-64bit 64 Bits
Graphics card: Apple M1 Max Apple 4.1 Metal - 83

Blender Version
Broken: version: 3.4.0, branch: blender-v3.4-release, commit date: 2022-12-06 18:46, hash: a95bf1ac01

Short description of error
Will crash seconds after playing animation in viewport when Cycles is selected and in render view. Both CPU and GPU crash. Does not crash when removing the Subdivision Surface Modifier so polycount may be a factor? This is a brand new Apple M1 Max computer from BestBuy with nothing else installed. Also tried initializing a render to video file and crashed as well. (Note: This is an error strictly with Apple M1 computers as I have tested it on an Apple intel MacBook Pro and it works just fine.) Thank you and happy holidays!

Exact steps for others to reproduce the error

  1. Load file. It is a mesh plane with default cloth and subdivision modifiers acting on a wind force.
  2. Make sure Cycles is selected as Render Engine.
  3. Select Viewport Shading to Rendered (to view cycles render)
  4. Push play. Will crash or freeze seconds after play.

@ThomasDinges, can you reproduce on Mac?

I am personally unable to re-create this crash. System information below.

I really appreciate you testing it. Could it be limited to the M1 Max? It's literally a brand new computer and a fresh install of blender so it's as basic vanilla as you get. I have no idea what other variable could be causing this. Thanks.

I'm doubtful it's limited to the M1 Max, but I'm also unsure what could be causing it.

It's possible this issue might be related to #103101 and can only be reproduced on faster hardware, but I'm not entirely sure.
Are you able to try Blender 3.5 and see if that helps? https://builder.blender.org/download/daily/

Also, if you get any crash logs, can you save them to a file and share them with us?

I just tried Blender 3.5 and had the same outcome. I have also tried previous versions which also crashed. Included is the crash report for both 3.4 and 3.5 in text documents. Let me know if there is anything else I can provide. ThanksBlender 3.4 Crash Report 12.13.22.rtf

So a small update. I have been working on basic tutorials learning the program and initially it crashed while simulating cloth in wind in the Cycles render viewport. But now as I am working on a towel it has started to crash while I was working on the hair simulation in the shader viewport and with eevee render selected. Only 1% of the one million hairs was set to simulate in viewport. So I believe it is not tied specifically to cycles but just crashes when it hits a specific memory limit? Here is another bug report.

To be perfectly honest, I'm not the best at reading crash logs like this. But with your first Blender 3.4 crash log here's what I could pick out. The thread that crashed was thread 20. And what was thread 20 doing? It's not clear to me. All I could make out was TBB stuff with is a tool to help with multi-threading, so the information isn't that useful.
The crash appears to be related to EXC_BAD_ACCESS. Which according to the internet is a memory (RAM) issue. But this could be related to a lot of stuff in Blender.

There was some odd information in the report. According to the report your Mac is running macOS 12.6.1. Which is different from the 13.0.1 you originally reported. I'm not sure what's going on there. Maybe this could be causing some issues and updating macOS might help? Maybe a factory reset might help, but we'll want to avoid that if possible.

I'm sorry, I don't know how to help or how to progress from here.

Thank you Alaska for taking a look. I was originally running Mac OS 12.6.1 but when I started getting consistent crashes I decided to update to 13.0.1 hoping that would resolve the issue. It did not but that was all I could think of as again it's a brand new computer, I've only had it for a week, with almost nothing else on it.

One thing I did find interesting is that I tried running the Intel version of Blender and while it ran a little slower because it's not meant for M1 it does not crash.

My only other thought is that maybe there is a flaw with the computer itself. If no other M1 Max users are having an issue then that would be the most logical conclusion. I'm planning on going to a BestBuy or Apple Store to see if I can run the same blender file on one of there display computers. I will also see about have this computer inspected by an apple technician. If I find out anything I will update here.

Tested with an M1 Max and it ran for more than 5 minutes without problems.

However if I change the rendering device from GPU to CPU I do run into crashes and the UI partly locking up occasionally (similar as #93199).

Hi, is there anyone who still able to reproduce this in latest 4.1/4.2?

Hi, is there anyone who still able to reproduce this in latest 4.1/4.2?

I still get a crash almost immediately (only when rendering on CPU, not on GPU) on 4.2.0 Alpha, branch: main, commit date: 2024-03-31 11:47, hash: 4855f8cd9cbe.

I am personally unable to reproduce with a M1 Pro using the CPU or the GPU with Blender 4.1.1.

Maybe it does need a certain level of performance, or many threads to reproduce the issue.
