The Brush Asset project is also an opportunity to streamline the workflow on how artists interact with assets. Artists should have a similar experience regardless of whether they are using Poses, Brushes or any other asset. In fact the project will use the Pose Library system to test some of its User Interface changes (i.e., Asset Shelf).

The Pose Library workflow was built integrating pose specific needs in different editors, giving artists the flexibility of creating and using pose libraries in the same place. The design presented here proposes a step back. To try to constraint the different usages to specific editors, and optimize the experience in each editor to those minimum requirements.

In simple terms this means to encourage the creation of assets in the Asset Browser, and using assets in the Viewport. Having the main functionality available at the click of a button, and the advanced options available via (context) menus.

Viewport

The viewport will focus on letting artist "use" the pose library, which in this case is more about removing things them adding them:

  • Remove Create Pose Asset button
  • Remove Flip Pose checkbox
  • Update the Pose Asset context menu

Asset Browser

The asset browser will focus on browsing, editing meta-data and creating assets.

New entries to the Edit Menu for Paste new assets. Over time, this (coupled with a Copy Asset operator) this should be available to more asset types in Blender.

We also move the Pose Library creation operators to this menu as well.

Eventually the menu can be expanded to include "update" operators (from paste and for pose library).

To keep the asset browser mainly for using, browsing and editing the meta-data, the Pose Library panels will be removed. The context menu can continue to allow users to access more advanced use options (e.g., Select Bones, ...).

Action Editor

Keep the Pose Asset options at a minimum here, with only "Copy Paste As Asset" and "Convert Legacy Pose Library".

The option to create a Posse Asset is moved to the Asset Browser, where meta-data can be edited directly.

Context Menu

{F14062020, size=full}

This is the context menu for the pose assets. At the moment it already has the following operators:

  • Apply Pose
  • Blend Pose
  • Select Pose Bones
  • Deselect Pose Bones
  • Open Blend File

There are a few things missing though:

  • New Apply Flipped Pose operator
  • Add the Assign Action operator
  • Shows the shortcuts: LMB, Ctrl+Click (upcoming paste as flipped), Drag LMB: #103267

Asset Shelf

Later, once the Asset Shelf is implemented, the existing Pose Library panel in the Animation tab will be replaced by the asset shelf itself.

Accessing the Pose Assets will be as immediate as it is now, with single-click to apply it and click + drag to blend the pose.

This design task can be closed before that change, since this is more related to the Asset Shelf than Pose Library specifically.

Progress

  • "Apply Pose Flipped" operator
  • Pose Asset context menu updates (and remove the Flip Pose checkbox everywhere)
  • Asset Browser: Edit menu with "Paste as New Asset" and "Create Pose Asset"
  • Edit Menu: "Paste as Update" operator
  • Edit Menu: Update Pose Asset
  • Remove Pose Library panels from Asset Browser

Feedback collected from @Rikstopher :

  1. Keep the "Create Pose Asset" in the Action Editor, but always have the new poses as "Unassigned".
The Action Editor already has this concept of stashing (e.g., stashing something to NLA). In this sense it is fine to have it as well for poses and to embrace it.
  1. There is no need to have "Create Pose Asset" in the Asset Browser.

I will close this for now since the core of this is already in master: blender/blender-addons@c164c5d866 + blender/blender-addons@2326ada37b + a8aae66f0e

Related tasks:

  • #103436 (Pose Library: Collection pop-up when creating new poses in Action Editor)
  • #102879 (Asset Shelf (for brush assets, pose libraries, etc.))
  • #103267 (No shortcuts shown in the Pose Assets context menu)
