Accurate alpha texture opacity issue #105700

System Information
Operating system: Windows-10-10.0.19045-SP0 64 Bits
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030/PCIe/SSE2 NVIDIA Corporation 4.5.0 NVIDIA 527.56

Blender Version
3.4.1

Short description of error
Blender seems to have an issue when it comes to painting alpha texture layer maps. When you first paint it on the mesh it comes out fine and accurate. But the moment you save the image texture, you loose all that progress.

Attempting to save the image texture first and then paint won't do much either, it will still come out broken the next time you open blender.

I do not remember if this has happened in the previous versions which I have texture painted some models.

I also tried dragging all the stuff from the current blend file to a new one, results are still the same.

I'm completely out of ideas of what else it could make this happen.

Here's how it comes out before saving:

And here is after saving:

I sincerely can't work with texture painting like this.

Hi, thanks for the report. Please share .blend file with steps to redo the issue.

I tried doing one more thing I haven't tried last night before I was gonna send the blend file.
It seems like there is something wrong with the mix node.

Using the alpha texture map with the mix node actually breaks the alpha opacity, completely keeping the alpha value on the mesh on an integer strength. Not sure why that happens.

Using the alpha texture map alone gives what you want.

Same situation with the MixRGB node from 3.3

alright, I think I have actually found a solution to the problem.

Instead of using the mix node, you can get good results using the Mix Shader.

looks like I'll be working like this until the mix node will get fixed.

Lemme know if there's a better solution.

Ok, this is final. Its not the mix node, never it was.
its actually the alpha channel not giving proper results.
So instead of using the alpha channel, it would be best to use the Color channel instead.

Thanks for the report, but the description and comments are still not clear on what the are exact steps for others to reproduce the bug.

Note that the codec (jpeg, png, exr) may be involved in the quality change, and this is not necessarily a bug.
